City crews respond to force main break in Kahala

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services (ENV) responded to a force main break in Kahala, Friday, September 11 near 4925 Kahala Ave.

The break occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. Crews arrived on scene at 6:45 p.m. and immediately worked to contain the spill and divert wastewater from the broken 24-inch line to an 18-inch bypass line. The spill was fully contained by 11:30 p.m. The area was cleaned, disinfected and deodorized by 5:45 a.m. Saturday, September 12.

The total volume of the spill was 42,000 gallons and crews recovered 37,500 gallons. A total of 3,000 gallons dissipated into the ground and 1,500 gallons spilled into the canal. The cause of the break is under investigation.

ENV has posted warning signs in the area. The State Department of Health has been notified and water sampling has been waived at this time due to the brown water advisory.
